Reclaim the Night

On Friday 20th April women across Liverpool united in a powerful protest against gendered violence in all its forms.

As a committee member of the Feminist Society at the University of Liverpool I was given the opportunity to be a steward and on the committee for Reclaim the Night which is a night for women to safely join together to express our human right to be within public spaces and not feel under threat from rape or violence.

According to the British Crime Survey (2001) there are an estimated 47,000 rapes every year, around 40,000 attempted rapes and over 300,000 sexual assaults

The first Reclaim the Night in the UK was on ‘12th November 1977, when torchlit marches were held across England in Leeds, York, Bristol, Manchester, Newcastle, Brighton and London.’
